Turkey fires artillery into Syria

Turkey has fired artillery into the Syrian territory, claiming that it has responded to shelling from the neighboring country.

"Six shells hit in Yayladagi in Hatay province (in southern Turkey) and caused no damage," said the Turkish armed forces in a statement on Friday.

"In accordance with the rules of engagement, Turkish artillery shelled the area where the fire originated," it added.

The Syrian government says Ankara harbors foreign militants and facilitates their entry into the western province of Latakia to fight the Syrian soldiers there.

Syria has been gripped by deadly violence since 2011. Over 150,000 people have reportedly been killed and millions displaced due to the violence fueled by Western-backed militants.

According to reports, the Western powers and their regional allies -- especially Qatar, Saudi Arabia and Turkey -- are supporting the militants operating inside Syria.
