Researchers at a US security firm have uncovered an early version of the Stuxnet computer virus that was used to attack Iran’s nuclear facilities. Symantec said in a report on Tuesday that its researchers uncovered a piece of code, which they called "Stuxnet 0.5," in November 2007, two years earlier than previously thought. The revelation means the US and Israel were working on the scheme long before it came to public notice in 2010. Stuxnet 0.5 was written using much of the same code as Flame, according to Symantec's report, another virus used against systems in Iran's nuclear energy facilities. Washington and Tel Aviv are believed to have jointly developed the malware, and that planning for the cyber weapon began at least as early as 2005. "It is really mind blowing that they were thinking about creating a project like that in 2005," said Symantec researcher Liam O'Murchu. The new discovery shows that Stuxnet and other viruses were developed under the presidency of George W Bush. Iran has been the target of several cyber attacks over the past few years. Iranian officials have described the US and Israeli cyber attacks targeting the country’s peaceful nuclear program as a matter of global concern. Tehran has called for a new international legal instrument to counter the increasing wave of such attacks in the world. In June 2012, a report by the Washington Post said the US and the Israeli regime had cooperated in creating the computer virus Flame to spy on Iran. The Republican-controlled state Senate voted on Monday, 31 to 4 in favor of a measure that allows colleges and universities to decide themselves whether to allow concealed weapons on their campuses. The state House previously passed the bill 70 to 11. The bill now goes to Democratic Governor Mike Beebe who is expected to sign the legislation. "Arkansas would be the 24th state to let colleges and universities decide whether to allow firearms on campus, though some states already allow students to carry concealed weapons." Supporters of the legislature argue that fatal incidents involving guns such as the shootings at Virginia Tech in 2007, in which 33 people died, and at Northern Illinois University, where 6 were killed in 2008, point to the need that students and professors openly bear arms. Their argument also holds that shooters are less likely to open fire in areas where the population is armed. The United States experienced several mass killings in 2012, including last December’s elementary school shooting massacre in Newtown, Connecticut that left 20 children and six educators killed, and the Colorado cinema shooting in July that killed 12 people and injured nearly 60 others. The rally was held on Tuesday in the province of Wardak where demonstrators chanted anti-US slogans. Anger is rising among Afghans over the mistreatment of locals, the desecration of Islamic holy places, and the killing of civilians by US-led foreign troops across the war-torn country. The Afghans have held numerous protests against the foreign forces. "The protests came after Afghan President Hamid Karzai issued a statement on Sunday saying that “it became clear that armed individuals named as US Special Force stationed in Wardak province engage in harassing, annoying, torturing and even murdering innocent people.”" On Monday, an International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) spokesman, Gen. Gunter Katz, rejected Karzai's allegations saying, “Over the past few weeks there have been various allegations of special forces conducting themselves in an unprofessional manner” in Wardak. LONDON, Feb 27 (Reuters) - GlaxoSmithKline's Pandemrix swine flu vaccine has been linked to cases of the rare sleep disorder narcolepsy in children in a scientific study in England that confirms similar findings elsewhere in Europe. The vaccine, more than 30 million doses of which were given during the H1N1 flu pandemic in 2009-2010, contains a booster, or adjuvant, and may have triggered an adverse immune reaction in some children at higher genetic risk of narcolepsy, scientists said in new research published on Wednesday. Researchers at Britain's Health Protection Agency (HPA) who published the study in the British Medical Journal said the at least 14-fold increased risk they found had "implications for the future licensing and use of adjuvanted pandemic vaccines". Narcolepsy is a life-long disorder and thought to be an autoimmune disease in which patient's immune system attacks the body's own cells. Its symptoms include frequent bouts of daytime sleepiness and in its severe forms it also causes night terrors, hallucinations and cataplexies - when strong emotions trigger a sudden loss of muscle strength. Studies in Finland, Sweden and Ireland have also found a Pandemrix link to narcolepsy, and GSK says more than 800 cases linked to the shot have been reported in Europe. A spokesman for the British drugmaker told Reuters on Wednesday: "We really want to get to the bottom of this and understand more about the potential role of Pandemrix in the development of narcolepsy." He added, however, that GSK believes "the available data are insufficient to assess the likelihood of a causal association between Pandemrix and narcolepsy." As Reuters reported earlier this month, scientists investigating the link further are homing in on the vaccine's adjuvant, a booster called AS03, and analysing whether its super-charging effect may have played a role. According to the UK results, vaccination with Pandemrix at any time was associated with a 14-fold increased risk of narcolepsy, whereas vaccination within six months before onset of the disease was associated with a 16-fold increased risk. "The increased risk of narcolepsy indicates a causal association," said the research team led by Liz Miller, a consultant epidemiologist with the HPA. They added, however, that because of variable delay in diagnosis, the risk may be overestimated because vaccinated children may have been referred to specialist sleep clinics more rapidly. Scientists said the risk translated into around one in 50,000, lower than studies have found in other countries such as Finland and Sweden where Pandemrix was used more widely and the risk was around one in 16,000 to 17,000 children vaccinated. In total, more than 30 million doses of the GSK shot were given in 47 mainly European countries during the H1N1 flu pandemic. It was not used in the United States. The UK study looked at 75 children aged between four and 18 who were diagnosed with narcolepsy from January 2008 and who attended sleep centres across England. Eleven of the children had been vaccinated with Pandemrix before their symptoms began. Finn stressed that Pandemrix is the only vaccine linked to this problem: "There is nothing to suggest that it occurs after other flu vaccines or vaccines against other diseases." Narcolepsy is thought to be due to loss of function in cells called hypocretin cells in one of the brain's sleep centres. John Shneerson, a consultant physician from the Respiratory Support and Sleep Centre at Papworth Hospital in Cambridge who co-led the UK study, said Pandemrix may have triggered an immune reaction against those cells, causing narcolepsy in some children who were genetically vulnerable. Experts say around 25 percent of Europeans have a genetic profile making them more susceptible. The British federation of trade unions, Trades Union Congress (TUC) as well as credit unions, advice agencies and housing associations joined the move to prevent the public from turning to unscrupulous loan sharks at the time of economic crisis. The group announced they will be active on February, 24 in Newcastle city in north-east England, where the people have been battered by the coalition government's austerity measures the hardest, have the lowest household incomes in Britain and the highest unemployment rate. The campaigners promised to promote alternatives to loan sharks as well as warning British people about the industry which is now turning over £8.5 billion. "Legal loan sharks are cynically trying to prey on the most vulnerable people but trade unions and other groups are campaigning hard to expose them and promote credit unions as the affordable alternative,” said Northern TUC regional secretary Kevin Rowan. Last year, pay-day lender and loan shark Wonga registered profits of £46 million by ripping-off people with a shocking interest rate of 4,214 per cent annually. The study, conducted by US Armed Forces Health Surveillance Center, “which analyzes health trends among military personnel,” did not, however, explain the sources of mental problems among American drone pilots, though military officials and other experts have pointed to several likely causes that include witnessing the inflicted carnage on live video and stressful work conditions, The New York Times reported on Saturday. “Remotely piloted aircraft pilots may stare at the same piece of ground for days,” said Jean Lin Otto, an epidemiologist who was a co-author of the study. “They witness the carnage. Manned aircraft pilots don’t do that. They get out of there as soon as possible.” "The study further confirms a mounting body of research materials pointing to mental health risks even for individuals piloting the flying killing machines from bases far from the actual war zones." “Though it might be thousands of miles from the battlefield, this work still involves tough stressors and has tough consequences for those crews,” said the report, quoting Peter Singer, a scholar at Washington think tank Brookings Institution that has widely written about US assassination drones. According to The Police Loophole, 34 companies have joined in publicly stating that governments who seek to restrict 2nd Amendment rights will themselves be restricted from purchasing the items they seek to limit or ban. Extreme Firepower Inc., located in Inwood, WV has had a longstanding policy that states: "The Federal Government and several states have enacted gun control laws that restrict the public from owning and possessing certain types of firearms...If a product that we manufacture is not legal for a private citizen to own in a jurisdiction, we will not sell that product to a law-enforcement agency in that jurisdiction." York Arms, located in Buxton, ME released a statement following new legislation in New York: "Based on the recent legislation in New York, we are prohibited from selling rifles and receivers to residents of New York. We have chosen to extend that prohibition to all governmental agencies associated with or located within New York." Quality Arms, located in Rigby, ID writes on their website, "elected officials have their own agenda to circumnavigate the truth and destroy the constitution of the United States." The site states: "Quality Arms Idaho will not supply and firearm or product, manufactured by us, or any other company nor will we warranty, repair, alter, or modify and firearm owned by any State, County or Municipality who infringes on the right of its citizens to bear arms under the 2nd Amendment." US veterans are receiving letters from the government informing them that they are disabled and not allowed to own, purchase or possess a firearm. February 21, 2013 posting ... my weekly radio show archive is now posted on the archive sub-page ... this week i cover a number of short items but the main science topic is on luminescence and specifically the luminescence of comet C/2012/F6 Lemmon that is about to make an appearance in our night sky of the northern hemisphere and is lit up light a giant celestial neon sign with the electrical discharge passing through it as predicted by my Plasma Discharge Comet Model ... i found it comical that a few weeks ago spaceweather.com published a statement saying that the comet was a brilliant green because of "reflected" sunlight ... i thoroughly slammed that absurdity and what i find amusing is that they are now still saying the same thing but leaving out the word "reflected" ... and just saying it is due to solar radiation on the comet which is further fairy tale science ... they sure can't let on to the truth and they SURE will never say that real spectrographic data would show LUMINOSCITY and spectral lines with far more energy than can be explained by reflected sunlight and which is very different from "reflected" light NOT TO MENTION that you would see RED SHIFTED light from this comet ... how's a little puffy snowball going to do that ... like i have always said ... many times it is not what they say in the gov mouthpiece news agencies ... it is what they do not say ... anyway join me this week on my show to keep up with current celestial events ... jim mccanney == http://www.jmccsci.com/
